Warm Solidarity at Minus 30: Bereke Food Boxes and Winter Heating

Winter in Central Asia is far more than a season: it is a severe test of survival for vulnerable families, solitary elderly individuals, and households caring for orphaned children. With temperatures typically falling to between −25 °C and −30 °C, and lower in highland regions, heating costs quickly outstrip modest household budgets. The Altyn Uya Public Foundation’s annual Winter Campaign delivers essential heating coal and Bereke Food Boxes (bereke means “abundance” in Kyrgyz) directly to families in need.

A Warm Hearth and Nutritious Food

Our winter emergency assistance focuses on two crucial essentials:

• Heating Coal Delivery: High-grade fuel coal is delivered directly to rural homes to keep stoves burning throughout the coldest months.
• Bereke Food Box: Essential staples including quality flour, cooking oil, rice, grains, sugar, and tea to cover a family’s basic needs for about a month.
• Objective Community Screening: Coordinated field visits with local village committees ensure aid reaches families with zero alternative support.

“Seeing smoke rise from a family’s chimney and knowing children are warm and secure inside is the true reward of our winter efforts.”
